The Avengers is the culmination of 4 years and 5 films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is the first film to bring together this many big characters, each from their own films. Truly a cinematic achievement.
Oh and the movie is great too.
The writing is fantastic and the screenplay between the characters is great. It's difficult to have these characters interact in an interesting way, but still behave like themselves according to their previous films. The action set-pieces are fantastic and the Battle of New York is still one of my favorite action sequences in film.
Loki is also one of the best villains in the MCU. We all know that Marvel has had some issues with villains in the past and Loki is one of the exceptions. His character of one that is lost about who he is, but also so intimidating and evil is fantastic. Whenever a movie can get me to understand a villain's standpoint, even though their standpoint involves a lot of violence, I see that as a great villain.
The Avengers is truly a modern classic, not only for being the first of its kind, but also for how well the movie was done.
