Directed by: James Gunn

Release date: August 1st, 2014

Rating: 9/10

Guardians of the Galaxy is something unexpected from Marvel Studios. This is their first film to explore the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe and does so very well. The stylistic directed from James Gunn as well as the comedic timing and talent from the cast make this a great new addition to the MCU.

What I like about this film is it’s a team up movie, but unlike Phase 1 it doesn’t give us a whole solo movie for each character. Don’t get me wrong, Phase 1 on the whole is fantastic and the payoff of seeing the Avengers on screen for the first time is awesome. But to do that kind of cinematic formula twice would’ve been a bad decision. I enjoyed seeing each of the characters introduced and how they reacted together as a team.

Ronin served well as the villain. I attribute that mostly to Lee Pace’s acting rather than the writing of the character. It was fun watching him on screen, but if you break down his character motivations and arc he isn’t any more interesting than your average Marvel villain.

Guardians of the Galaxy is a great new direction for Marvel that gives us a connection to the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe. The cast does a great job and all around this is a very entertaining film.
