Captain America: Civil War

Updated: Feb 12, 2020

Directed by: Anthony and Joe Russo

Release date: May 6th, 2016

Rating: 10/10

Captain America: Civil War is the third Captain America film and the second directed by Joe and Anthony Russo. After their huge success with The Winter Solider part of me thought that they wouldn’t be able to make something better. Well with this movie, they did.

Captain America: Civil War is a loose adaptation of the comic storyline in which Tony Stark and Steve Rogers find themselves on opposite sides of a law stating that the Avengers must be held accountable under a world government. The film uses the events of Age of Ultron as a main reason for the “Sokovia Accords”. Which makes me consider this film something of Avengers 2.5 more than Captain America 3.

The main praise that I give this movie is its ability to balance so many characters in one movie. Everyone gets their moment to shine but. Cap, Iron Man, and Bucky are the main characters I would say.

Not only do the Russo Brothers manage to balance all of these existing characters so well, they introduce two new ones; Spider-Man and Black Panther, both of whom I was excited to see on the big screen.

I love the story as well. It’s just complicated enough to be interesting but not too complicated so that you have to see it more than once to understand it. I also really appreciate how, even though it’s a Captain America movie, both sides of the argument are valid in their own ways. No one is ever truly “right” although that can change based on the opinion of the individual viewer.

Captain America: Civil War is, in my opinion, the best Captain America movie and possibly the best Marvel movie to date. The way it balances the characters while still telling a coherent story is masterful. Fantastic movie.
