So, this movie is obviously a cash grab from Disney and I knew that going in. I legitimately think that the movie can stand on its own as a pretty solid film. I liked it. However, when you compare it to the original it doesn't hold up. Which is a challenge because you HAVE to compare it to the original since it's a remake. The visuals were great, the voice acting was good, but because they chose to do an absolutely realistic version of this where no animal could do anything a real animal couldn't do, it limits the kind of shots that they can create. The original had great big, colorful, and exaggerated shots that made it visually interesting. This feels like a lesser version of that. If they had kept the same detail in the animation that they did in this movie, but took more liberties with what is physically possible in the real world, I think it would've been better. For example, the "Just Can't Wait to Be King" sequence. In the original the colors on the animals shift to wild colors and vivid designs and there's a layer cake-esqe tower of animals. In this one it's just Simba running around other animals as they drink water. It makes sense, but it isn't as interesting.
