Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. This is a hard one to review for me because I love watching it, yet I can recognize the flaws within it. The things this movie gets right are its tone, the acting, and the visuals. However, the story is a little bland and there are some side arcs that either should get more screen time than they did, or none at all. There isn’t anything really new or different in the plot of this movie. Basically Peter finds his dad, dad turns out to be a jerk and tries to take over the world, and Peter needs to stop him. However the screenwriting is quite good in terms of dialogue and interaction. It feels as if the overall plot was given to the writers from someone else and they were told to do what they wanted, as long as this overall plot stays intact. The entire plot line of the Sovereign feels wasted and/or unnecessary. They really only serve the purpose of being a motivation for the Guardians to 1) get to Egos planet and 2) be canon fodder when the final battle takes place. I know there’s the post credits with Adam Warlock, but to the film as a whole, I don’t think they were needed. It’s a solid film but I think that it falls short of the first one in a few areas.
