Cats

Directed by: Tom Hooper

Release date: December 20th, 2019

Rating: 2/10

I’ll keep this one brief since it’s been done to death. There’s absolutely no reason why this movie should exist. I have not seen the Broadway musical, but even so I feel that it was much better than this.

Apart from the god awful CGI, it’s very hard to follow what’s happening. There is very little dialogue as most of the movie is done in songs. Generally speaking, it’s about a bunch of cats who are trying to become the “Jellicle choice”, which basically means they die and are sent to a better place. There’s a subplot about one cat kidnapping others in order to become the Jellicle choice, but it’s not clear why he does what he does. In fact, it’s not clear why anybody is doing what they’re doing.

The CGI is just straight up bad. The cats look like some sort of demon cross breed between a feline and a human person. The people also act too cat-like for comfort. There’s a bunch of crawling around and nuzzling other cats. It’s just strange.

This is very much a novelty movie. It’s one to watch because of how bad it is, and it’s bad. I would recommend watching it with a large group of people or in a state where you aren’t sober; or both. I’m not sure exactly where the movie went wrong since the director, Tom Hooper, also directed Les Miserables; a movie I quite like.

Cats is an abomination of a movie that can’t truly be enjoyed except when laughing at how bad it is. The CGI is terrible, the actors give strange

performances, and the plot is hard to follow. Overall a very cringe-y movie that should not have even gotten the green light, but here we are.
